A Snowy Day

March 6 was a snowy day in Prospect Park. Having discovered lots of worms and other tiny creatures living beneath the leaves and bark on previous trips, the children wondered how their forest friends were coping with the cold and snow. Would they still be there? Some thought they might be sleeping deep under the ground, while others guessed they would all be gone. Once in the park, we gathered around the beech tree and immediately noticed how quiet the forest seemed. Was it the snow that caused this peaceful silence? The snow made its own special sound under our feet, a kind of joyful crunch as we began exploring and hunting for signs of life. Garden trowels in hand, the children poked through the crusty snow and into the leaf litter. They mostly turned up only soil, the bugs and worms were indeed well hidden. Eventually, some tiny millipedes were discovered nested within the bark of a fallen log. The search will continue as spring approaches!

Who might be living here?
