First Day at Shore School

Thursday found Mary Ann, Jen and Kori's classes at Coney Island Beach for their first visit to the shore. This time the weather cooperated and we were blessed with sunny breezes (last week's trip was a brave attempt, but the rain and wind forced Doug, Valerie and Marisol's classes back to school).  The children got right to work digging in the sand, mixing sand and water, sifting and collecting, observing and exploring. There was a lot of interest in the way water flowed through channels and how quickly it disappeared into the sand. Kids noticed how the sand changed its consistency and color as they dug down deeper. They also sadly noticed the presence of hundreds of bits of plastic scattered about the beach.

Below are photos with quotations recorded by our Parent Notetakers. Thanks to everyone for all your help in making this a wonderful trip!

There is a chorus of calls from children: "Water! Water! Water!" Everyone needs buckets of ocean water to complete their sand project.

Digging an "ocean" in the sand. It is on a tilt, because "real oceans are on a tilt."

Getting a closer look.
