My Roots Grow Down

It's the fourth week of social distancing for those of us in New York City and other spots around the world. With schools closed, families are straining to adjust to this new and daunting reality. Although we cannot be together during this time, we can keep our connection to one another and to nature through the power of story and imagination and a little help from the digital world. On these pages we continue to offer bits of our shared experience in the urban forest and shore of Prospect Park and Marine Park Salt Marsh in Brooklyn, NY.    Read on...

One of our Forest School rituals is to sing Sarah Pirtle's, My Roots Go Down. As we sing the song, we ask children to name something in the forest and their suggestions become the source for the lyrics of that verse. Each time we sing is different and the forest becomes populated with a new cast of characters ranging from the expected to the utterly fanciful. In this post, forest school teacher, Mr. Bill, sings another version of the song, accompanied by images of kids at work. Sing along with us!
